Notes - Mrs. Moore was born in in Keokuk County, Iowa on Jun 2, 1863, the daughter of George and Emily Storm. The latter's maiden name was [also] Moore. She came to Mesquite when she was 14 in 1877 with her parents and the other children, making the trip by train. There were eleven in the family -- Mr. and Mrs. Storm and nine children. Alighting from the train at the depot here, they inquired the way to the Leroy Porter place, about a mle and a half southeast of Mesquite, and then walked there. The Porter family had come here earlier from the same Iowa community. They spent the night at the Porter home and the next day rented the Frost place, in the same community by further away from Mesquite. They remained there one year and then rented land on the Hanby place, north of Mesquite. From there they went to Cooke County and lived there one year.
They came back to Mesquite and on Sept. 16, 1879, she married William Thomas Moore, and they lived on a farm two miles east of Mesquite until December 20, 1900, when they moved to Mesquite, occupying a house that stood on the present site of the Mesquite Cooperative Gin Co. Mr. Moore, who was a deputy sheriff of Dallas County, came home ill that night. He developed pneumonia and died eight days later on Dec. 28, 1900
Four years later, Mrs. Moore bought her present home on Terrell street at Allen, from Ed F. Vanston and later enlarged it by tearing down the two front rooms and building a two story section for four rooms, two below and two upstairs, with the rear of the house remaining one story in height.
For many years Mrs. Moore conducted a boarding house, doing her own cooking and was famous for her good biscuits and pies. Mrs. Moore sais that she had baked enough pies to reach from Mesquite to Washington. Mrs. Moore recallas that she saw a negro for the first time in her life on the train on the way to Texas and that she was afraid of him. She also recalls that when she came here there were two business establishments here -- one general merchandise store and a saloon. The Leroy Porter refrrred to above was the father of the late W. J. (Bill) Porter and the latter owned the original Porter farm at the time of his death several years ago. It now belongs to Oscar McDearman.
Mr. and Mrs. Moore were the parents of nine children, five of whom lived to be grown and married and are still living, as follows: Mrs. Maggie Johnson of Tacoma, Wash., Mrs Ethel Cole who makes here home with her mother; Cleve Moore, also of Mesquite and Earl and Forrest Moore both of Dallas. She has twenty two grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She is a member of the Presbyterian church.
Mrs. Moore's life has been an exemplary one in all respects. The editor has lived next door to her for thirty-four years and knows whereof he speaks. She enjoys the respect of everyone and the affectionate regard of those who know her well.
