  • Notes
    • Note: Stephen was mentioned in the will of his uncle Thomas Hewlett of Henry Co., Va. in 1787. By 1803, Stephen is referenced as a resident of Livingston County, Kentucky. There he purchased 400 acres on Saxon's Creek on 5 July 1803. Subsequently this land became part of Caldwell Co., Kentucky. Stephen is styled as a private in Captain Lynn West's Company of the 1st Regiment of Kentucky Volunteer Militia during the War of 1812. Captain West's troops participated in the battle and Massacre of Frenchtown of the Raisin River in Michigan, but Stephen is referenced as 'absent'. The 'Handbook of Trigg Co., KY. - Gateway to the Jackson Purchase' by Eurie Pearl Neel lists Stephen as a Captain of the Militia in 1810 in the area of Caldwell Co., KY. He and his family continued to live in this area until 1815 or 1816, when Stephen and his brothers Martin and David, as well as their sister Sara by then a widow moved to the area of St. Helena Parish, Louisana. After his arrival in the area of Marengo Co., Alabama, Stephen assigned his interest in the estate of his father to his brother Nicholas.
