    • Capt. James Watts was a Methodist, active 33rd degree Mason, Capt. of Calvary Company from Mississippi. His children were reared in DeKalb, Kemper County, Mississippi. Son of Judge John Watts and wife Elizabeth Ann Chapman, his early life was spent in Jasper County where he attended Paulding Academy, but left school in 1846 to study law.

      He was admitted to the bar in 1850 and practiced law in DeKalb and Meridian.

      On February 25, 1851 James Gilates Watts married Eleanor Bell.
