- MR. W. H. BORDEN DEAD.
Brief Sketch of His Busy and Useful Life.
Goldsboro, N.C., Aug. 15.--A little after two o'clock this morning, as stated in the last edition of the News and Observer, Mr. William H. Borden of this city passed away. He died with an abiding faith in God, fully realizing that the great change was but passing from a lower to a higher sphere, where there should be no more pain and sorrow and where God should wipe away all tears. He was stricken several days ago with heart trouble from which he never rallied. He was born in Goldsboro on the 27th day of April, 1841, being in the 67th year of his age. He was the son of the late Arnold Mariah Borden and the brother of Mr. E. B. Borden, president of the Bank of Wayne, of this city; the late Capt. J. C. Borden, Mrs. H. M. Dewey, Mrs. J. F. Miller and the late Mrs. W. F. Kornegay.
Mr. Borden was a graduate of the State University, was fond of letters, and notwithstanding a busy commercial life, found much time to read and was one of the best informed men of the community. Strong in mind and body, he could accomplish a great deal in a short length of time.
Mr. Borden was married three times, his first wife being Miss Susan Edmundson, the mother of Mr. Walter E. Borden, of this city, Mrs. Sue Douglass, of Charleston, S. C.; Mrs. Dr. Georgia Cobb, of this city and the late Mrs. Julia Jerman. The second wife was a Miss Julia Edmundson, the mother of Mrs. Dr. Sallie Hutton, of New Mexico, and Mr. Will Borden, of New York; his third wife who survives him was Mrs. Hattie Kennedy, the mother of Miss Rachael Borden and Sydnor Borden.
Mr. Borden loved Goldsboro and was devoted to its interests. Furthermore, he accomplished a great deal for the city, for having faith in his town, he was one of the pioneer manufacturers when he established a factory for the manufacture of buggies, thus giving employment to a number of people. Later he began the manufacture of furniture on a large scale, and employed hundreds of skilled laborers.
He was a member of St. Paul M. E. church, of this city, and was devoted to its interests.
The death of Mr. Borden was heard with deep regret in Raleigh where he had many friends. He frequently visited at the home of Mr. B. S. Jerman, whose first wife was Mr. Borden's daughter. Mr. Borden was a successful man of affairs, public spirited and deeply concerned in what concerned the welfare of his State, his party, or his church. He lived a useful and exemplary life and leaves an honored name to his children and grandchildren.
