WILLIAM MONROE BROWN, son of Franklin (Francis*) Marion (born Aug. 1833) and Mary Smith Chandler Brown, who was a widow with two children at the time of her marriage to Franklin Marion, the latter a native of Alabama, and she of Louisiana. They married in Anderson Co., after F. M. came to the county in 1851. He engaged in farming and served through the war in Arkansas and Louisiana, as a Corporal in his Company.

William was born at Bradford, Anderson County, Texas, 4 June 1854, and lived within five miles of the spot ever since. His schooling facilities were poor, but he was a man of observation, and learned much from experience. He lived with his parents until his marriage, when he went to farming for himself. In 1875, he bought a farm, where he lived, adding 320 acres to it in 1882. He cleared and improved the land, adding good buildings, fencing 100 acres and putting 80 acres in cultivation and renting a portion of it out. In the years 1888 and 1889, he operated a mill and gin. He made an average of fifteen bales of cotton, plenty of corn, cane and stock and grew ample vegetables and meats for family use, and for the support of the farm.

His mother, Mary, died in 1883, dying in the faith of the Methodist Episcopal Church. His father remarried in 1887 and two children are of this union.

William was married twice **, first to Nancy Featherstone, daughter of John Featherstone of Henderson Co., Texas. Two children were born of this union:

    1. Child, died in infancy
    2. Ballard, b. 29 Oct. 1876

William then married Mary Holland (12 June 1859, Athens, Texas) on 18 Nov. 1881. Mary was the daughter of Bluford C. Holland of Mississippi, who came to Texas in 1847. Mary bore her husband eleven children, namely:

    1. Willie, b. 18 Sept. 1882
    2. Lenna, b. 26 April 1884, m. Lynn Stafford
    3. Archie, b. 29 Nov. 1885, m. Charity Scarbrough

    Notes:

    Birth:
Read about the controversy surrounding "Shanghai" Brown's birth year by clicking here.

    Immigration:
What caused "Shanghai" to leave home as a teenager and migrate to Texas? The following family story, provided by Nancy McCall, seems to explain this.

"Family lore has that he was an orphan and was living with his aunt and her husband (no names were given).  The uncle was very mean and worked him like a slave. When Shanghai was sixteen, he shot the uncle after a hard beating and thought he killed him. His aunt helped him get a horse, food and clothes, and he went away. Years later, he learned from other settlers that his uncle did not die."

    Residence:
There is no proof that this is the correct Marion Brown. However, his place of birth, Alabama, and his age, which is sixteen rather than seventeen, and the fact that he is supposed to have come to Texas in 1849 suggest that this MIGHT be his 1850 Census record. This location would put him relatively close to the place in which Mary Smith Chandler was living in 1850.

    Died:
    F. M. Brown
Last week just as we were going to press, we heard of the death from heart failure of Mr. Brown of Catfish country. Mr. Brown was one of the oldest citizens of our county. He was a confederate soldier, going from this county in a company raised, we have been informed by K. Richardson.

He belonged to Co. F of Bass´ regiment. Mr. Brown was a warm hearted man of good intentions and a true friend.

    Buried:
The birthdate on his headstone is given as 5 August, 1808, but a handwritten document, possibly written by his wife, says that he was born 5 August, 1833 in St. Clair County, Alabama.

"Shanghai" had a 100-acre farm in Anderson County that he had farmed all his adult life, and he requested to be buried under a certain walnut tree on his land. This explains why his gravestone is located in a small plot along the Beaver Pond Road rather than in the nearby cemetery. (This information was originally documented by Ethel Margaret Clair Brown, the wife of William Henry Brown, one of "Shanghai's" grandsons.)

Francis married SMITH, Mary on 15 Sep 1853 in Anderson County, Texas, United States. Mary (daughter of SMITH, John and UNKNOWN, Unknown) was born about 1825 in Louisiana, United States; died in 1883 in Anderson County, Texas, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  SMITH, Mary was born about 1825 in Louisiana, United States (daughter of SMITH, John and UNKNOWN, Unknown); died in 1883 in Anderson County, Texas, United States.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: 4 Sep 1850, Walker County, Texas, United States

    Notes:

was widow Chandler when she married F.M. Brown

    Residence:
Although her surname is spelled "Chanlers" in the 1850 census record, the fact that this listing includes two children of the right names and ages for her children; the fact that she was a widow; and the fact that living with her is a John Smith, old enough to be her father; make it seem very likely that this is Mary Smith Chandler, widow, who three years later married Francis Marion Brown.

    Notes:
