It was named for Alexander J. Dallas of Pennsylvania, U.S. Treasury Secretary. Dallas County is located in the Black Belt region of the west-central portion of the state, and is traversed by the Alabama River. Dallas is bordered by Perry, Chilton, Autauga, Lowndes, Wilcox, and Marengo counties. It currently encompasses 975 square miles. Originally, the county seat was at Cahaba, which also served as the state capital for a brief period. In 1865, the county seat was transferred to Selma. Other towns and communities include Marion Junction, Sardis, and Orrville."

Notes - John George Rainer ("Ri-ner") of Carnesville, Franklin Co, GA, bought 200 acres on Stephens Creek on the old wagon ford from May Bobo (widow of Lewis) on Mar.26, 1794. He added another 39 1/2 acres on the west end of that property from Mary Bobo on May 10, 1794. On Dec.6, 1798, he and his wife Phoebe (both of Franklin Co) sold 16 acres to the commissioners of Carnesville. John George was on a jury in Franklin in 1802. In about 1806 he & his family moved via an old Indian trail to the Tennessee River valley, probably ending up in Wayne Co. By June 30, 1831, they were in Dallas Co, AL. They deeded 80 acres in the Cahaba District of Dallas County to Lawrence M. Brunson (husband of their daughter Kessiah) on May 24, 1834. On Jan.6, 1836, John George bought land in Sumter Co, AL, & the following year moved there to a little community known as Rosser.
