  	This man enlisted under Capt. John F. Doan in Tishimingo County, Mississippi, February 1, 1863. The company was assigned to duty as 2nd "D" of Roddey's 4th Alabama Cavalry Regiment. A year later officers and men transferred to Company B of Williams' Alabama Cavalry Battalion, which later became Company B, Burtwell's 11th Alabama Cavalry Regiment. Harp's records are filed with the 11th Alabama Cavalry.

  	Records of this regiment show that he was captured near Decatur AL (or Moulton) on Mar. 18, 1864. At this time most of Roddey's command was serving with the Army of Tennessee near Dalton GA, and it's not clear to me what was happening in the Tennessee Valley.

• Notes

  James was listed in the 1860 Census, but his wife was remarried by 1870. This suggests that he may have died during the war. There is a James D. Harp listed as a private who served in the 4th Alabama Cavalry. <http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/> Following is an excerpt from a narrative about this unit: "In April, 1864, the regiment was transferred to the Dept. of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. After fighting at Brice's Cross Roads [also called Tishomingo Creek] with heavy losses, it saw action in various conflicts from Montevallo to Selma, including the defense against Union Gen'l James Wilson's Raid. At Selma, on 2 April 1865, most of the unit was captured. The remaining part surrendered at Pond Spring." James was living in Tisomingo County in 1860; so the fact that this unit fought in the area further suggests that the James D. Harp who served in the unit might have been this same individual.
