Notes - Senator Josiah Sugg was born April 5, 1821 in Farmville, Pitt County, NC, the son of Lemuel and Nancy Hardy. His great grandmother was Elizabeth Harrison of Berkeley Plantation fame, which linked him as ancestor to several United States Presidents, and other politicians. Not much is known of his early life. He seems to be a man of wealth and esteem in the county as of the 1850 Census, age 29 his real estate was worth $1,110 and owned 21 slaves and by the 1860 Census, age 39, his value of real estate was $4,650, Value of personal estate $25,000, as well as he owned 24 Slaves. He was married twice, first Mary Elizabeth Harper, second Sarah Williams Pridgen, and had a total of 9 children. He served in the 41st Congress 1870, and as Justice of the peace, Hookerton, NC in 1873. He was elected North Carolina Democratic Senator 1874 to 1875 for Greene & Lenoir Counties. He passed on reelection of his 2nd term due to poor health and died December 20, 1876. He was buried in the family cemetery on the Sugg Farm, Snow Hill, NC.
