When she was about 10 years old, her eldest sister, Theora, began Baylor College for Women in Belton, Texas. Mrs. Bartlett moved to Belton with her four daughters, in order to be near Theora. When Theora eloped with John Ray Guinn in 1920, Mrs. Bartlett returned to Malakoff with the youngest daughter, Therma, and put Theretta and her older sister "Tess" in the Baylor Academy, the college preparatory school for Baylor. | |

The Depression had hit her father very hard and the family was not as affluent as it had been, but Theretta managed to live a good life for a young woman of that time. | |
