Notes - Mr. V. I. Stirman is truly one of Henderson county's best known and most substantial citizens. He was born right here in this county on August 13, 1855, and will therefore be seventy years old in a short time. And he has spent practically all his life here. His schooling was had in Henderson county, and his education was pretty thorough, too, for during his young manhood he was for a few years engaged in teaching. One year he taught here in his home town of Athens, and another year was spent in school work in the town of Kaufman.
Like most all the young men of his day he had his experience at farming, but that didn't appeal to him, and he took to mercantile pursuits. Mr. Stirman was married to Miss Ida Pickle in 1879, and they have reared two children, one son, W. B. Stirman, and one daughter now Mrs. Tom Faulk, both now residing in Athens.
Mr. Stirman is a substantial and outstanding citizen of the county. His name is familiar to almost every man, woman and child within the county. He has been engaged in the drug business for the past thirty-six years, with exception of about three months, when he had sold out. He came right back into business again and the Powers Drug Company is owned and controlled by Mr. Stirman and his son, W. B.
Mr. Stirman has always been a booster for his home town and it is with pride that he has seen it grow from a frontier village to a splendid little city, with modern conveniences. His place of business shows that he has been one of the progressive type of citizens. He has been identified with every movement of an educational nature whereby his town was interested. He is an active and consistent member of the Christian Church, and in all religious matters he has been a valuable ally.
In politics, Mr. Stirman has always been affiliated with the Democratic Party, but has only once consented to become an office holder, and at one time he served Henderson County as County Superintendent of Schools. He prefers to cast his vote fro his choice and let the other fellow hold the offices.
Taken all around, Mr. Stirman has been a useful and loyal citizen of Athens, and no man enjoys a wider circle of staunch friends than he.
